The Salesian Family celebrates the presence of Don Bosco

(ANS –The Philippines –Canlubang, 5 January 2011) – On 23 December the casket of Don Bosco arrived in the “Saint John Bosco” Province of North Philippines to be welcomed by the various groups of the Salesian Family with a number of events.

From the city of Manila, during the Christmas season the relics were taken to a number of Salesian centres: the “Don Bosco” parish and that of “Saint Ildephonse” in Manila-Makati and the youth centre in Manila Tondo. Before the end of the year the casket had reached the flooded city of Legazpi, visited the Salesian houses in the south of the island of Luzon and then from 3 January it has been in the Salesian Institute of Canlubang.

Here the students of the “Mary Help of Christians School” of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians performed  a variety of  musical items, with the “Kawayan Band” (bambù band), drums and lyres. Among those in the procession escorting the casket in the city were the Salesians-Cooperators, the postnovices in white cassocks in the lead and the  seminarians as ushers. The “Juventus” youth group had the task of documenting everything and used the profile db relic twitter account to record their impressions

Another special attraction provided by the Salesian Family in the North Philippines is a reproduction of the Becchi house, in which Don Bosco was born. Reproducing the original in Italy, it drew the attention of young and old as did the statues of Mamma Margaret and Don Bosco beckoning to pilgrims, welcoming them inside.

Inside the house, is an exhibit featuring DB`s three loves: the Eucharist, Mary and the Church. In the Eucharist section, there are photos featuring the original vestments worn by Don Bosco. It also houses various churches built by Don Bosco himself  A stampita (holy picture in filipino terms) bearing an authentic dedication of Don Bosco is one of the main attractions of the exhibition.

Computer terminals dot the area where individuals can read the life of Don Bosco via a flash presentation. The files are also shared with those who wish.

The seminarians also set up a souvenir booth where individuals could buy key chains, lanyards and other Don Bosco items. Booklets about the saint are being distributed free of charge. InsideOut, the official publication of the Don Bosco Seminary, released a special issue in keeping with the visit. Yesterday 4 January they also organised an ecumenical prayer session in the style of Taizè.

Also yesterday there was a gathering of students from Salesian and other schools in the gym at Don Bosco College which ended with a mass
