Presentation of the new Statutes of the World Confederation of the Past Pupils of Don Bosco

(ANS –RMG –Rome, 27 June 2011) – In a letter dated 24 June the Rector Major, Fr Pascual Chávez has officially consigned to the members of the World Confederation of the Past Pupils of Don Bosco the new Statutes. In  presenting the document, the result of a long process and approved “ad experimentum” the IX Successor of Don Bosco encourages the Past Pupils to have a greater impact on society, the Church and the Salesian Family.

On Don Bosco’s name day and the feast of the  Rector Major the long process of the  revision of the Statutes of the World Confederation of the Past Pupils of Don Bosco which this year celebrates the centenary of its foundation came to came to its official conclusion; “a providential coincidence and a very significant one too,” as Fr Chávez says in his letter.

The World President Dr. Francesco Muceo, and the Confederation Delegate, Fr Josè Pastor Ramírez were very happy to receive the news while they were involved in visits respectively, in Spain, at La Coruna, and the Dominican Republic in the context of the preparations for the Latin American Congress in 2013.

The process of the revision of the Statutes of the World Confederation of the Past Pupils went through a final phase of drafting at the IV World Elective Assembly held at Rome in the Salesianum, between 30 September and 3 October 2010. The Rector Major’s Letter of Presentation and consignment indicates their approval.

“At this particular historical moment, society, the Church and the Salesian Family ask you to take to heart the defence and promotion of those values we all consider to be `non-negotiable`. They are indeed the guarantee of a truly human life for all. I refer specifically to the values of life, freedom and truth.” the Rector Major writes. “You are called to live out your secular life guided by a clear conscience, doing your job with thoroughly professional competence and expressing your openness to today`s world through real social involvement.”

“Don Bosco calls you once again to be “good Christians and upright citizens”, to promote human dignity and the identity of the family, to exercise solidarity within the Association and beyond it, especially towards young people who suffer the most disadvantage, to keep in contact with young people who are concluding their educational process in Salesian houses so as to invite them to become actively involved in the Association. This will make them feel they are always “Past Pupils of Don Bosco”, and you will offer them opportunity for continuing formation and an effective group for social involvement.”

Recalling once again the value of the local associations, Fr Chávez encouraged the Past Pupils to continue their formation: “The “education you have received” in the past cannot remain a mere memory; you have to turn it into a force that draws the Past Pupil with it to influence the world,  transforming it and making it more human.”
