On the way to the bicentenary: a logo and a poster

(ANS  - RMG Rome, 15 July 2011) – A month before the start of the process of preparation for the celebration of the bicentenary of the birth of Don Bosco (1815-2015), the Department for Social Communication introduces a logo and a poster on the topic. The graphics have been produced thanks to the collaboration of the “Don Bosco Institute of Communication Arts” (DBICA) in Chennai.

On 16 August the process of preparation will officially as explained by the Rector Major Fr Chávez in his letter to the Salesians on 31 January 2011. A period of three years during which the Salesians are invited to know Don Bosco and his charism better: the life-history (2011-2012), the pedagogy (2012-2013) and the spirituality (2013-2014).

To accompany this process the Department for Social Communication has prepared a series of graphics composed of a three-fold logo and three posters.

The logo, which is a single design, will change during the three year period according to the year and the topic to which it refers and the colour. Don Bosco’s face, in the middle of the boys, recalls how his life was constantly given to them; the curved lines, round the 200 indicate the hills and the humble origin of the saint of Turin – “the peasant lad from the Becchi” – as well as the horizons towards which his dream and his mission would take him: the salvation of youth.

The poster, the first in the series, recalls the task for the three year period: get to know Don Bosco. On the right is a picture of the  face of  Don Bosco reproduced from the death mask made by Cellini after his death and from which a wax mask was made which today can be seen in the casket kept in the Basilica of Mary Help of Christians as well as in that travelling round the world. Under the general title are indicated the three years with the first stage emphasised. The little house at the Becchi, of which he said “this is my house,” recalls his origins; the scene of him hearing the confession of Paolo Albera (1861), his second successor, recalls his first concern: the salvation of the young. The three photographs recall some stages of his life: the band (1870): the breadth of his humanity; the first missionary expedition (1875): the missionary outreach of the Congregation; at Martí-Codolar (1886): his fully matured life spent at the service of the young. The other two versions of the poster will be available in the coming years.

The graphic work has been done  by the DBICA in Chennai, and in particular by Fr Harris Pakkam, as head of creative design and  J. Sathish Paul, graphic and creative designer. The DBICA is a school of graphic and visual arts very involved in the media field, in design, in culture and in art. Founded in 1997 as a centre for education in the mass media the areas it covers are: professional formation in the media field, offering seminars and research projects, the production of audiovisual material and the short film festival. Its main aim is to make Don Bosco known and loved through various kinds of figurative art, drawing the young people to him especially those poorest in India.

The Social Communication Department invites Provincials and SC Delegates to take the logo and the poster putting them on their own sites and using them for their own initiatives in the course of the three year period of preparation for the bicentenary year 2014-2015. “I hope that this initiative, as happened with the logo for the 150th, helps to bring out the unity of the Congregation and strengthens the idea and seriousness of what we are about the celebrate”, says Fr Filiberto Gonzalez, Councillor for Social Communication.

The poster, in the various languages is attached to the June ANSphoto. On the sdb.org sites the files of the three logos and the first poster are available; in the same section it is possible to request the original  files for adaptations in  other languages.
