The Pope a messenger of peace and of hope

(ANS - Lebanon El Houssoun, 13 Septmber 2012) – Tomorrow 14 September the Apostolic Journey of Benedict XVI to Lebanon begins. It is a journey which the whole of Lebanon is waiting for with great expectations and which it is hoped will contribute to building peace for the entire region of the Middle East, at present the theatre of turbulence and violence. Fr Vittorio Pozzo, a Salesian in the El Houssoun community describes the situation on the eve of the visit.

“The Pope’s journey is a very important event,” the Salesian said in an interview with the Italian RAI broadcasting station. “The Pope is coming as a sign of peace, as a messenger of peace, and just today  (yesterday ed.) in a newspaper there is a cartoon of the Pope arriving on a white dove with an olive branch in its beak. This is the symbol of his journey, even though no one expects miracles, neither as regards the Christian presence and even less as regards a solution to the problems of the Middle East. Nevertheless at this tense moment a word of comfort and of hope has its own very powerful symbolic significance and so the Christians and not only them but the whole of Lebanon is ready to welcome the Pope and make his journey a success. All the conflicts in the country will be silenced at least for a week.”

Those with the greatest expectations for the Papal visit are the  Christians in Lebanon, the main reason for the Apostolic Journey since it is to them that the Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation that the Pope will present is addressed. “Lebanon is the paradigm for Christians in the Middle East. The Pope has chosen to go there where there is a notable Christian presence and where Christians play their part in all sectors of public life. (…) They will certainly be invited to live out better their Christian vocation and to be more visible signs of their  faith, more significant as regards their fellow non-Christian citizens, the Muslims and also as regards neighbouring countries. The Pope will also appeal to the Lebanese especially Christians to appreciate the own resources. Their Christian identity needs to be reflected in public, social and national life.”

Salesian participation will be on all levels. “Tomorrow the first day of the Papal visit  the Salesian Bishop Armando Bortolaso, Vicar Apostolic emeritus of Aleppo and for many years resident in our community will meet the Pope in Harissa, on the occasion of the signing of the Apostolic Exhortation by the Holy Father. Then with our boys we shall be present in the square on Saturday evening, at Bkerké, outside the Maronite Patriarchate  where the Pope will meet the young people of Lebanon. We expect we shall have 20-25 young Christians. Finally, the following day the confreres of the El Houssoun community will celebrate Mass with the Pope in Beirut after which Benedict XVI will hand over the Post-synodal Exhortation Apostolic  for the Middle East.
