World Youth Day is a great event

(ANS - Brazil Niterói, 23 July 2013) –  “The attention of the world media is, for the most part, on the Pope’s visit to Brazil, but they give little or no information on the World Youth Day.” So says Anderson Bueno, correspondent of the Salesian Bulletin, in a press conference for the printed media in Brazil.

In an article published on the site of the Salesian Bulletin, he points out that the media speak about the arrival of the young people who come to see the Pope, about the organization in the city of Rio de Janeiro and about the preparations made by volunteers.  They regard WYD as just the meeting of the young people with the Pope. “WYD is much more than that” he says.

“it is true the World Youth Day, started by Pope John Paul II in1984, has always been marked by the main event, the vigil and meeting of the young people with the Pope. But the nature of the entire celebration has changed in subsequent years. It is no longer just a meeting with the Pope, but a meeting of the Church with young people, Catholic and non-Catholic. It involves a whole series of activities. In Brazil, these include the opening Mass, catechism lessons with the Bishops of different nationalities and different languages, the Via Crucis, the vigil and the concluding Mass.”

The observations made by Anderson are confirmed by the rich programme offered by WYD in parallel events such as Catholic Expo, the Vocations Fair and the Youth Tent staffed by various Church Organizations. In his talk to the authorities gathered in the Guanabara Palace in Rio de Janeiro, Pope Francis himself said, “As you know, the principal reason for my presence in Brazil goes beyond its borders. I have come for the World Youth Day. I have come to meet young people coming from every part of the world, attracted by the open arms of Christ the Redeemer. They come seeking refuge in his arms, close to his Heart, to listen afresh to his clear and powerful call: ‘Go and make disciples of all peoples’”

Anderson concluded by saying, “There are tens of activities going on simultaneously. They are a reflection of different forms of expression of the Catholic faith. There are many experiences, stories and testimonies, but the world media pay no attention. Fortunately the Catholic press is present and can give a different perspective, and a better understanding of what is going on inRio de Janeiro”. Among the Catholic press, there is also ANS and the Salesian communications team in Brazil.
