Parco Quinta da Boa Vista

Rio de Janeiro: young people are the real news

(ANS - Brazil Rio de Janeiro, 24 July 2013) – Despite the problems caused by the closure of some metro lines, the 28th World Youth Day began with Mass celebrated by Archbishop Orani João Tempesta of Rio de Janeiro.

Viewing the television channels and the pages of the newspapers, both national and international, we find plenty of news of the problems created for the people responsible for the Pope’s security. There are reports of episodes of violence on the margins of yesterday evening’s protests against governor Sergio Cabral and the public money spent on WYD, and the problems caused by the closure of the metro yesterday afternoon. No one can deny that these things happen in Rio, but there is something else happening in Rio at the same time! The young people are making news!

Young pilgrims are flooding the streets and showing great courage in overcoming the difficulties they inevitably meet. They constitute a huge and very significant presence in the city of Rio de Janeiro and the surrounding areas. Mother Yvonne Reungoat said at yesterday morning’s press conference: “the presence of young people from the five continents is a great sign. For the people to see young people who are happy to be Christians is a sign of hope.” It is up to the people of Rio de Janeiro, and Brazil and the rest of the world, who are following proceedings on television and internet, to receive and understand that sign.

Yesterday morning, when Fr Edson Donizete Castilho, Provincial of Sao Paolo, offered to pay the taxi driver who had brought him and the provincial Economer and two students of theology to the Santa Rosa Institute in Niterói, the taxi driver said, “You owe me nothing! Today I have decided to help you people who are participating in the great event of the WYD.”

At the press conference yesterday morning at the Salesian House in Niterói, the Rector Major and the Mother General of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians spoke about young people (see link below to yesterday’s report http://www.infoans.org/1.asp?sez=1&doc=9476&Lingua=2).

The enthusiasm and desire to play an active part in the WYD at Rio de Janeiro were very evident at the Vocations Fair being held at the Parco Quinta da Boa Vista, where congregations, movements and new communities are presenting their charism and spirituality to the young people, inviting them to discern their vocation.

The Rector Major went there, along with some of the General Councillors who were present in Rio de Janeiro. Fr Chávez stopped at some stands of the Salesian Family (like that of the Salesian Sisters of the Sacred Heart, and that of Canção Nova) and of some other orders. Frequently he was recognised by religious and priests who took the opportunity to greet him. One religious observed, “It is nice to see the Superior General of a Religious Order participating in WYD to be close to the young people.”

There were expressions of enthusiasm on the part of the young people, especially at the stand shared by the Salesians and the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians of Brazil, where Mother Yvonne Reungoat was also a visitor.

An interesting unplanned episode occurred when Fr Chávez literally climbed a tall tree, followed by some of the novices from the Salesian Novitiate in Indápolis in Mato Grosso!

The young people are the real news from Rio de Janeiro!
