Opening of Diocesan Enquiry for the Cause of Beatification of Fr Carlo Braga

(ANS - Philippines Pampanga, 30 January 2014) – On 30 January, the diocesan investigation for the beatification and canonization of the Servant of God Father Carlo Braga opened in a solemn ceremony in the Cathedral of San Fernando (Pampanga - Philippines). Fr Braga was a Salesian missionary to China and founder of the Salesian presence in the Philippines.

Archbishop Paciano Aniceto of San Fernando presided at a solemn Eucharistic celebration in honour of Don Bosco. Three other bishops and more than 100 Salesian and diocesan priests concelebrated. Cardinal Joseph Zen, Archbishop Emeritus of Hong Kong gave the homily. He spoke of how Fr Braga was the father of his Salesian vocation.

Those present included the Provincials of the Philippines, Fr Eligio Cruz and Fr George Militante, and the Provincial of China, Fr Lanfranco Fedrigotti; the Postulator General, Fr Pierluigi Cameroni, and Vice- Postulator, Fr Nestor Impelido; several members of the Salesian Family, including many past pupils who had had Fr Braga  as confessor and spiritual guide.

After the solemn celebration, the first session of the diocesan enquiry took place. This involved the establishment of the court and the oath of the members that compose it: the diocesan bishop, the episcopal delegate, the promoter of justice and the notaries.

Carlo Braga lost his mother at a young age and was entrusted first to the Daughters of Mary Help of Tirano and later to the Salesians of Sondrio. With the outbreak of World War I he was recruited into the army. He joined the Salesians and applied to be sent as a missionary to the Far East. Arrived at Shiu Chow, in the south of China, he became a collaborator of Bishop Versiglia, the first Salesian martyr. In 1930 he became Provincial of China, giving a major boost to the development of the Salesian missionary work there. He founded the first Salesian school in Beijing, thereby fulfilling one of Don Bosco’s dreams. The Salesian work expanded significantly but this growth was dramatically interrupted by communism. Fr Braga then turned his attention to the Philippines, where he started the Salesian presence. In 1955 he was made Provincial Delegate and in 1958 became Provincial.

Profound optimism, fatherliness and happiness were the salient features of Fr Braga, who promoted a wonderful family spirit everywhere he went. He died in Bacolor, Philippines, on 3 January 1971.
