Preparing for the International Congress on Salesian Pedagogy. Some points for reflection – 2

(ANS - RMG Roma, 12 March 2015) – Ahead of the International Congress on Salesian Pedagogy "With Don Bosco, educators of young people in our time," we continues our interview with the coordinator of the congress, Fr Vito Orlando, SDB.

What is the specific contribution of Salesian pedagogy in the current environment?

The root of Salesian pedagogy is faith and the Christian view of life. This root determines the aim and motivation of Don Bosco’s educational project as well as the ways it is implemented. The dignity of each person as a child of God and the consequent respect due to every young person, despite their fragility, are fundamental elements of the legacy of Don Bosco.

The heart of Salesian pedagogy, which leads to effective education, is the relationship: a loving presence, encouraging, inspiring the young and supporting their life-journey with compelling reasons that enhance their skills and help them to become "good Christians and honest citizens."

Today we are called to create an effective educational relationship in a complex social reality which is very fragmented, with great cultural diversity and a great diversity of perspectives for personal fulfilment and inclusion in society. In these conditions it is not easy to enrich the educational relationship of cordiality and joy, without self-denial, responsibility and commitment to growth in self-realization.

To be proactive, as taught by Don Bosco, an educator must "become all things to all", in order to earn their trust and confidence, to accompany the young as they grow, respecting both their greatness and their fragility, and always recognizing their dignity. This is why the Salesian educator is always close to the young, to defend them from any risk of marginalization in the current social situation.

As educators, in the spirit and style of Don Bosco, we believe in the potential for good of every young person. We feel in our hearts the truth of what Don Bosco said and lived: "It is enough that you are young for me to love you.” When we are able to express this love and win their confidence, we will be able to capture the deep desires of the young people and help them to satisfy these deep desires by harnessing their potential. In this way we will achieve what Don Bosco used to say: “Only those who know they are loved are capable of loving, and those who are loved can achieve anything, especially from the young."
