"Giving hope, confidence and joy to so many young people that are still waiting for us"

(ANS - RMG Roma, 20 July 2015) – A few days before the start of the SYM DON BOSCO 2015, the world meeting of young people of the Salesian Youth Movement (SYM), Fr Fabio Attard, General Councillor for Youth Ministry, speaks about the significance of this important meeting in the year of the Bicentenary, and the opportunities and prospects it offers.

What, in broad terms, will be the structure of the meeting and what will be new about it?

The meeting of the SYM DON BOSCO 2015 will be an occasion when young people of the SYM from all over the world will be strengthened in their spiritual and charismatic identity. The days will be made up of moments of prayer, listening, sharing and celebration. In that kind of environment, cultural diversity finds its spiritual foundations and charismatic. The young people will come in contact with the very source of their choice. They will be strengthened especially in their apostolic commitment on behalf of the many young people who look to them as young people who give a clear and credible witness of their faith in the style of Don Bosco. It is not so much that there will be anything new in this meeting but there will be the renewing power of the person of Christ as experienced by Don Bosco, who is still young and alive 200 years after his birth.

What will the highlights be?

The main highlights will be the morning sessions of the first three days, during which the participants will reflect on what it means today to be "Like Don Bosco", what is the challenge today in living life "With the Young" and then accepting the call to give oneself "For the Young". The fourth day will be a day of reconciliation and forgiveness, with the sacrament of Confession at the centre. The evenings of these four days will include visits to the Salesian places and to places associated with the Saints of Turin who engaged in the social apostolate, as well as a visit to the Shroud of Turin. Each day will end with a moment of Marian devotion, with a meditation and the recital of the Rosary, and with moments of celebration and music.

August 15 is the day of the pilgrimage when they will all go to Colle Don Bosco. There will be a walk from Castelnuovo Don Bosco to the Becchi in preparation for the vigil of the day on August 16 - the day of the 200th anniversary of the birth of Don Bosco.

These are moments that taken together will be an expression of Salesian prayer, of Oratorian joy and a renewed apostolic commitment in the spirit of Don Bosco.

What message do we want to convey to young people through this event?

The message is simple: today as yesterday, Don Bosco continues to be an example of faith received with joy, lived in a family spirit and shared generously in the playground of life. We will go back home after these days with the belief that it is good to be followers of Jesus with the help of Mary, and that with Don Bosco we can still feel the beauty of it today.

How can young people and members of the Salesian Family who cannot be physically present in Turin follow the event?

This is a question we thought about from the very beginning. We have created a social network that will serve as the basis for everything that is going on. There will be live streaming on YouTube and Facebook, and already the material that will be available to participants can be found on the websitewww.symdonbosco2015.com

This will be of benefit not only pay to those who cannot be present, but also after the event to those want to revisit it to present it again in their own pastoral situation. In short, we thought of this as a “glocal” event, both global and local!

As General Councillor for Salesian Youth Ministry, can you say a few words about the meaning and the legacy of this Year of the Bicentenary?

The legacy of this Bicentenary Year should be a renewal in the heart of each of us of the fire that burned in the heart of our Father and Teacher Don Bosco. Our intention as a congregation and Salesian Family from the beginning was not to create artificial fireworks. Rather, we were and are still convinced that this year is a year of grace in which, first of all, we are called to give glory to God for the gift of Don Bosco and the Salesian charism. Secondly, we all hope that this year we will be renewed in our passion for young people so that we can give hope, confidence and joy to the many young people who are still waiting for us.
