(ANS\u00a0\u2013\u00a0<\/strong>Italy\u2013Turin<\/strong>,\u00a028 March 2025) \u2013\u00a0<\/strong>On the morning of\u00a0Friday, March 28, 2025<\/strong>, during the first round of voting, the\u00a029th General Chapter<\/strong>\u00a0of the\u00a0Salesian Congregation<\/strong>\u00a0elected\u00a0Fr. Silvio Roggia<\/strong>\u00a0as the new\u00a0General Councilor for Formation.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Article 135<\/strong> of the <\/strong>Salesian Constitutions<\/strong>,<\/strong> \u201cthe General Councilor for Formation is responsible for promoting the integral and ongoing formation of the members. He follows with particular care the initial formation in its various phases, ensuring that the content, study structure, formation methods, and facilities provide the necessary conditions for the growth of the Salesian vocation.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the responsibility now entrusted to Fr. Silvio Roggia<\/strong>, an Italian Salesian originally from Piedmont<\/strong>, like Don Bosco. He was born on July 4, 1963<\/strong>, <\/strong>in Novello, Province of Cuneo<\/strong>, <\/strong>within the Diocese of Alba<\/strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

He entered the Pinerolo-Monteoliveto novitiate in 1982<\/strong> and made his first religious profession<\/strong> on September 8, 1983<\/strong>, later professing perpetual vows<\/strong> on May 5, 1989<\/strong>, <\/strong>in Turin<\/strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After serving for several years in Salesian houses within his Province<\/strong>,<\/strong> he embarked on a missionary journey<\/strong>,<\/strong> dedicating himself to the service of poor youth in English-speaking West Africa (AFW)<\/strong>. He worked as Novice Master<\/strong> first in Ondo, Nigeria (1999\u20132005)<\/strong> and later in Sunyani, Ghana (2005\u20132012)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In total, he spent nearly 20 years in Africa<\/strong>,<\/strong> from 1997 to 2016<\/strong>,<\/strong> also serving as Provincial Delegate for Formation (2013\u20132016)<\/strong> and Vicar (2010\u20132016)<\/strong> for the AFW Province<\/strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was later called to Rome<\/strong>, where from 2016 to 2022<\/strong>,<\/strong> he collaborated with his predecessor, Fr. Ivo Coelho<\/strong>,<\/strong> in the Formation Sector<\/strong>.<\/strong> During this period, he personally coordinated an extensive international research study<\/strong> involving over 4,000 Salesians<\/strong>\u20143,500 young members and 500 guides and formators<\/strong>\u2014to deepen understanding of initial formation experiences and Salesian accompaniment<\/strong> in the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since 2022<\/strong>,<\/strong> he has served as the Rector of the international Salesian community of theology students, \u201cZeffirino Namuncur\u00e1\u201d<\/strong>,<\/strong> located in Rome, Via della Bufalotta<\/strong>,<\/strong> and as a Councilor of the \u201cMaria Sede della Sapienza\u201d Vice-Province<\/strong> at the Salesian Pontifical University<\/strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
