Arnold
Fire in the Salesian house
at Amgalan
(ANS
- Mongolia– Amgalan, 18 May 2009) – On the night of Thursday 14 May a fire
seriously damaged the Salesian house in Amgalan, near Ulaanbaatar, in
Mongolia.
The flames which started in the boiler room destroyed the community room,
kitchen, toilet, bathroom, and room of Bro Arnold Pattyona, and the
volunteers` office was badly damaged. Other rooms were saved and
providentially no one was hurt.
The alarm was given by one of the children who are looked after by the
Salesians. Immediately the Salesians and the youngsters tried to tackle the
flames but it was beyond them and so the saved what they could of documents
and other items. The Fire Brigade arrived shortly afterwards.
The Dominic Savio community in Amgalan, set up some years ago, looks after
street children. There were 25 in residence with the Salesians at the time.
The volunteers’ office has been somewhat repaired and now serves as a
community area and kitchen. The loss of the heating system is a problem,
since although during the day, when for example this report was being
written, the temperature was 22 degrees centigrade, it gets very cold later
in the day and evening. |
