Pakenham
Chadstone
Chris Ford
Frank Moloney
Pakenham
David O’Malley
O’Malley
Tim Costelloe
Preventive System: 150 years
and still going strong
(ANS – Australia–
Melbourne, 27 April
2009) – On Monday 21 April, all members of Salesian schools staff groups –
in the State of Victoria, Australia gathered at Pakenham just outside
Melbourne for a full day of reflection on the Preventive System.
There were more than 400 people - teachers, support staff, administrators
and Salesians - at the meeting, organised and animated by the Salesian
Principals Association of Australia, and its present Chair, Fr Chris Ford,
the Principal of Salesian College, Chadstone. It was part of the programme
organised by the “Mary Help of Christians” Province of Australia (AUL) to
celebrate the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Congregation.
The Provincial of Australia, Fr Frank Moloney, recalled that 150 years ago
Don Bosco gathered with a small group of men to ensure the future of the
Oratory at Valdocco, and the culture of love that was lived there. 150 years
later there are these people involved in Salesian schools gathered in
Pakenham who are still dreaming the dream, and living a culture of the
heart.
Fr David O’Malley, Vice Provincial of the United Kingdom (GBR) Province, in
Australia to take part in several of the jubilee celebrations led the day’s
reflection. He gave two talks and developed the theme of the Preventive
System.
In the first Fr O’Malley addressed the issue of the way we “lived” the
Preventive system. It closed with a questionnaire that assessed how we
“practised” the Preventive system in our various schools.
In the second he pointed out that the Preventive System is not a question of
things to be done, but rather an attitude to be lived by the educator.
The day closed with a Mass celebrated by the Salesian Bishop Tim Costelloe,
Auxiliary of Melbourne.
