Welcome to the Pampas you dreamed of, Don Bosco

(ANS – Argentina - Santa Rosa, 12 August 2009 ) –  “The Santa Rosa diocese, with immense joy, receives the relics of the body of Don Bosco, Apostle of the young”. These were the words Bishop Mario Aurelio Poli, of Santa Rosa, used to open a brief pastoral letter addressed to the faithful of his Diocese while Don Bosco`s Casket is passing through.

“We would like to join in the festive atmosphere of the Salesian Family as they meet their dear founder and spiritual father” Bishop Poli said in his letter, dated 7 August, inviting the faithful to feel that they were being visited by Don Bosco, a Saint who is much venerated and loved in the Pampas.

Recalling the ancient and traditional veneration of martyrs relics, the bishop reminded them how devotion to the Saints should contribute to understanding the mystery of Christ. “In Don Bosco`s case", the bishop said "we can draw grace, thanks to the relic of his right arm now once again upraised over Argentina pointing out to his sons his desire to extend his family beyond the confines of the oceans”.

Bishop Poli briefly recalled the stages which brought Salesian missionaries to Argentina in 1875 and how then, opening works, institutes of trades and arts, getting involved in popular missions, along with the Salesian Sisters they worked for God`s Kingdom “achieving a monumental work of education for generations of boys and girls up until today”.

The bishop, recalling the 50th anniversary of the Diocese of Santa Rosa in 2007, declared that “its creation was, for the most part, thanks to the apostolic work of the Salesians of Don Bosco and the Salesian Sisters. Catechesis for the children, holistic education, missions deep inside the nation, help for the poor has given rise to a generous sowing which continues today”.

The pilgrimage of the Casket has mobilised thousands of the faithful and young people who have been amongst the first to go and meet Don Bosco, which is why the bishop hopes that the Casket`s voyage will sow grace and blessings. “I would like his tender gaze to pause over us as it did for youngsters in his time, recalling his sensitive heart for the most vulnerable, his unconditioned love for Jesus and his Church, which he spared no effort to make known in the world”.

With a wish that the Casket`s pilgrimage through the diocese of Santa Rosa will inflame everyone with Don Bosco`s burning missionary zeal, Bishop Poli finished his letter invoking blessings on the Salesian Family and recalling the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Congregation “Dear and great Salesian Family: Best wishes for these days of grace and the anniversary you are celebrating!”
