Salesian Family Days: Educating to desire

(ANS – Rome – RMG, 22 January 2010 ) – The XXVIIIth in the series of Salesian Family Spirituality Days began with a heartfelt commemoration of the victims, Salesians and all the others in the earthquake which struck Haiti on  12 January. Fr Adriano Bregolin, Vicar of the Rector Major and the first with the responsibility of animating the Salesian Family open the  proceedings inviting everyone to pray in silence for the youngsters, the Salesians and the other victims of the earthquake.

“Bringing the Gospel to the young, ”Fr Bregolin said referring to the Strenna for 2010. “The real young people of today, we are well aware of  them. Sated with many things but hungry for the meaning of life; these are young people with a thousand ways of enjoying themselves, but all the same don’t feel happy; there are many others who are poor, often  brutalised  by unacceptable living conditions, there are youngsters  deprived of their fundamental rights, their personal identity, health, education, freedom.”

The first talk was given by Fr Giannantonio Bonato whose, “Educating to desire ,” was the first step of the journey which those attending the Days of Spirituality will make in these days: educating young people to make explicit the desire to see Jesus, as did the Greeks to the apostle Philip. “We want to see Jesus.”

Fr Bonato explained that speaking about spirituality means speaking about education, and education needs to be constantly based on an anthropology which is open to the desire to have an encounter with God. In conclusion, the Salesian, Rector of the house in Bolzano, said: “Maybe we will never hear ‘We want (we desire) to see Jesus’ unless we have the intelligence and the patience to educate desire. Here education and evangelisation find one of their most decisive points of encounter, here more than ever the Salesian saying finds its truth that ‘we evangelise by educating’ and ‘we educate by evangelising,’”

In the evening the video on the Strenna for 2010 we shown. It was followed by the Good Night of the  IXth  successor of Don Bosco. Fr Chávez spoke to the Assembly about his experience of walking to Santiago di Compostela last September with his Vicar, Fr Adriano Bregolin. He drew five lessons from it which also apply to the journey of the Christian and Salesian educator:
• test you own strength to resist,
• walk together with others,
• think and talk to your travelling companions,
• allow the prayer of thanks and praise to rise up in your heart,
• carry with you only what is essential to reach the goal.

It will be possible to follow the Days of Spirituality as they unfold on the sdb.org site  which once again this year has  a section devoted to them with the programme, the texts,  photographs and short video news items.
