Castrellón Pizano

Castrellón Pizano

A strong reaction by Bishop Castrellón Pizano to threats of violence

(ANS – Colombia Barrancabermeja, 10 June 2010 ) Bishop Camilo Fernando Castrellón Pizano SDB of Barrancabermeja, a few days after returning to his diocese after having taken part in the meeting of Salesian Bishops in Turin, has issued a press statement following threats made by email, to the “Development and Peace Programme in Magdalena Medio,” to the “Jesuit Refugee Service” and to 15 other organisations involved in safeguarding rights, work and social respect.

A mysterious sender, “bloquelimpieza” (clean-up),  sent by e-mail,  at 23.13 on 26 May, a message threatening 17 organisations committed to the field of human rights  to work and to the victims of violence.

“In union with the clergy, members of consecrated life and the faithful of this Diocese, and pursuing the tradition of Gospel commitment to life and the defence of human rights, I strongly reject such threats” is the firm response of the Salesian Bishop.

Bishop Castrellón Pizano, recalling that God is “the sole Lord of Life,” quotes extracts from John Paul II in which he speaks about the inalienable nature of human rights and violence being unacceptable. Dialogue is the only solution in order to life peacefully in society he says referring to the words of the Polish  Pope.

Expressing solidarity with the Society of Jesus and the other organisations under threat, Bishop Castrellón Pizano appeals to all the Institutions of the State  in Colombia so that: “the authors of these threats be identified and brought to justice; the life and rights of individuals may be protected; any attempt be resisted to compromise with the violent and the corrupt; all the necessary measures that the law permits be taken to prevent the violent and the corrupt imposing their own culture of death on the fringes of the Lawful  State or with the intention of supplanting it.”

A heartfelt appeal is also addressed to the authors of the threats  “so that they may follow the path of respect for human rights and the search for shared solutions, and allow themselves to hear in their consciences, the most sacred place of the human being the voice which invites them to grow as individuals, to avoid evil and to do good.”

Bishop Camilo Fernando Castrellón Pizano SDB was appointed Bishop of Barrancabermeja on 2 December 2009. Previously he was Bishop of Tibù, Colombia. At the meeting of the Salesian Bishops he spoke on the subject “The encouragement of consecrated life in the Bishop’s ministry.”

For a number of years Colombia has been a country torn by armed conflicts, violations of the law and the power of paramilitary organisations. The safeguarding of human rights is something which the Church and the Salesians have been vigorously pursuing on various fronts, especially in the defence of the poorest and the least.
