A publication awaited by the Salesian Family

(ANS –Italy Rome, 29 April 2010 ) The Libreria Editrice Vaticana has recently published the anastatical copy of the   “Rituale Sacramentorum” of Saint Francis of Sales. The work provides some interesting points regarding Saint Francis of Sales as a Master of spirituality. Far in time from its first edition (1612), but close to the spiritual interests of the Salesian Family, the volume presents a little known aspect of the bishop of Geneva.

Two Professors from the Salesian University, Fr Manlio Sodi, director of three series on the liturgy  for the Editrice Vaticana, and of the Rivista Liturgica, and Fr Morand Wirth, an expert in the spirituality of Saint Francis of Sales,  have been responsible for this anastatical printing  of the “Rituale sacramentorum Francisci de Sales Episcopi Gebennensis iussu editum anno 1612.”

Between the XVI and XVII centuries there was a notable flowering in the production of  Rituals which were a feature of the pastoral life of many Dioceses. Even after the publication of the Rituale Romanum of Paul V (1614) various local churchs continued to publish texts which reflected the specific tradition of the place, while they gradually began to make use of what was to be found in the Rituale Romanum.

Tha present publication, which is part of the series “Monumenta Studia Instrumenta Liturgica”, makes it possible to know at first hand the efforts of the Bishop of Geneva to respond to the pastoral needs of his Church. The work is particularly valuable on account of its contents, various texts which come directly from the pastoral zeal and the pen of the great Bishop, in order to discover typical aspects of the pastoral practice and spiritualty of the time.

In the ample introduction the two editors set the work in its context in the light of the “Doctor Divini Amoris”; they give a ample presentation of the contents  and complete the work with appendices which assist in a fuller understanding of the Rituale, and open the  way for further research into the liturgical, pastoral and spiritual tradition of the Western Chrurch.
