(In Illo uno unum)

(Sagittaveras tu cor meum charitate tua)。

Vatican – The Coat of Arms of Pope Leo XIV

(ANS – Vatican City) –  The Holy See Press Office has officially released the explanation of the Coat of Arms of Pope Leo XIV. Here is the detailed description:

Blazon

Per fess – the division of the Stemma: In the first, azure (blue), a fleur-de-lis argent (silver white lily flower). In the second, white, a flaming and pierced heart gules (red) pierced by a diagonal arrow, supported by an open book, proper in its natural color.

The shield is surmounted by a silver mitre adorned with three gold bands joined by a vertical gold stripe. It features red lappets, fringed and crossed in gold, and is accompanied by the crossed petrine keys: the gold key in bend and the silver key in saltire, bound with a red cord.

Motto

IN ILLO UNO UNUM  (“In the One Christ, we are one”)

Explanation

The Coat of Arms of the Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV, prominently features symbols of deep spiritual and Marian significance. In the blue field, representing the heights of heaven and symbolizing Marian devotion, stands the fleur-de-lis (flos florum, flower of flowers), a classic emblem of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

In the white field, the emblem of the Augustinian Order is displayed: a flaming heart pierced by an arrow. This symbol reflects the words of St. Augustine, as recorded in his Confessions“You pierced my heart with Your love” (Sagittaveras tu cor meum charitate tua).

This element has been a staple of the Augustinian emblem since the 16th century, often combined with a book, symbolizing both the Word of God that transforms the hearts of men (as it did for St. Augustine) and the invaluable works of theology and philosophy that the Doctor of Grace gifted to the Church and humanity.

The use of white (in the Papal coat of arms, a shade of ivory) echoes its presence in the heraldry of other religious orders and signifies holiness and purity.

The motto, “In Illo uno unum” (“In the One Christ, we are one”), is drawn from a sermon by St. Augustine, specifically his exposition on Psalm 127. It emphasizes the unity of Christians in Christ, stating, “Although we Christians are many, in the One Christ, we are one.”
